The Career Technical Education (CTE) Firefighting Technology pathway, housed at Clovis East High, recently received a National Industry Certified Program of Excellence designation from the Law and Public Safety Education Network (LAPSEN)! The class offers students the chance to learn and develop firefighting skills, and earn nine certifications needed for employment with a fire department, like wild land fire fighting and first response medical aid. It started over ten years ago and is now led by retired firefighter George Mavrikis, who brings 30 years of real-world experience to the classroom.

To earn the accreditation, Mavrikis worked to complete a lengthy application which was followed by an evaluation by LAPSEN and interviews with administrators, school counselors and students in the course. This is the second program to receive national accreditation, joining the CTE Criminal Justice pathway, also at Clovis East High. With this, Clovis East High is now one of only three schools in the nation to have two nationally-accredited programs on its campus!

“This national accreditation highlights the exceptional work being done to prepare our students for their future. They are not only gaining industry standard fire-fighting skills, but they are also growing as leaders and learning what it means to serve others,” said CTE Director Margaret Files.

The class celebrated the accreditation with an official ceremony, and invited district administrators and local firefighters to tour their "classroom": a large garage that houses their fire engine, gear lockers, hoses and other equipment.
